Student Arts Organization Feature: D/ART (Art on the Diag)

D/ART is a platform for the students of the University to showcase their creative abilities in a public setting right on the Central Campus Diag. D/ART facilitates the interaction between the students on central campus at the University of Michigan and student-designed art installations. Through integrating student art into campus life, D/ART challenges social and cultural perspectives in Ann Arbor by voicing our concerns with topical and/or historical conversations.

Student Arts Organization Feature: M-agination Films

M-agination Films is a student production company through UAC at the University of Michigan. The Board of Producers, made up of Michigan students, chooses 15-16 passion projects per year that are submitted by other students to produce, shoot, and screen at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor, MI in April at the Annual Festival.

Student Arts Organization Feature: TAAL

TAAL is a female, South Asian fusion dance team that was founded in 2005. The team uses its members’ diverse backgrounds in dance to incorporate a variety of styles such as Bollywood, Bhangra, Hip-hop, and Indian Classical into the choreography. TAAL is proud to have recently grown into an 18 member team of girls from many diverse education and cultural backgrounds.

Student Arts Organization Feature: Impact Dance

Impact Dance is a dance company open primarily to non-dance majors in the University of Michigan community. The company is relatively small, with only about 20 members each year. The company's members choreograph and perform pieces of a variety of styles including, but not limited to, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop in fall and spring shows as well as many other guest performances throughout the year.

Student Arts Organization Feature: Javanese Gamelan Student Group

Javanese Gamelan is a type of musical ensemble made up of predominantly percussion instruments, mainly made of bronze, which has been played on the island of Java in Indonesia for centuries. The University of Michigan's ensemble is the only non-Western musical ensemble offered for course credit through the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and therefore provides an invaluable opportunity for students to learn about a vastly different musical tradition, and about a culture and artistic practice from another part of the world.

The Accolades: SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD!

The Accolades SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD went to Michigan Sahana. Michigan Sahana is an Indian Classical Music and Dance organization. Each spring Michigan Sahana showcases eight to nine different Indian performance groups on campus, namely U-M’s Bollywood teams, Raas and Bhangra teams, Indian A Capella group, and classical groups for their hallmark production That Brown Show (TBS). The main goal of TBS is to build solidarity and show unity in the Indian performance community on campus through performing on one stage. Through bringing the entire campus Indian performance community together and cultivating inter-team relations throughout the semester preceding the concert, TBS serves to strengthen sustainable relationships within the Indian arts community.

The Accolades: Outstanding Achievement by an EMERGING ARTS ORGANIZATION!

The Accolades Award for Outstanding Achievement by an EMERGING ARTS ORGANIZATION went to Art on the Diag (D/ART). D/ART's dynamic public art has allowed it to quickly emerge as a leader of the visual arts-based student organizations at Michigan. By installing day-long interactive installations directly onto the Diag, D/ART challenges its audiences by interrupting the assumed functions of public space. Using nontraditional materials like bubble wrap, party streamers, cement blocks, mylar, cardboard, and vinyl, D/ART forces passerby to reconsider the use of public space as a forum for interdepartmental dialogue, ecological issues, and social ills of student life. Each public artwork is completely designed, built, installed, maintained, and deinstalled by D/ART's core group of 15 students.

The Accolades: Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in CULTURAL ARTS PRACTICE!

The Accolades Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in CULTURAL ARTS PRACTICE went to both Revolution Chinese Yo-Yo and Swing Ann Arbor.

Revolution is a Chinese Yo-Yo performance group that seeks to promote Chinese and Taiwanese culture through performance. Mixing with modern music and dance, Revolution maintains their traditional roots through this folk sport and work hard to represent the Asian American community and spread cultural awareness to places that other student organizations cannot reach.

Swing Ann Arbor is a U-M student organization whose purpose is to provide the University, the Ann Arbor community, and the greater region of Southeast Michigan with high-quality swing dance instruction and weekly dances. Particular emphasis is on educating people about traditional American dances (Lindy Hop, Charleston, etc.) that originated in African American communities in the 1920s and 1930s, and have evolved alongside jazz music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExR0tHrva2s

The Accolades Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION went to MUSIC Matters. MUSIC Matters is a student organization built to combine the power of music with the enthusiasm of college students to bring our campus together and make a difference in our community. In order to do so, MUSIC Matters hosts SpringFest each spring, a daylong festival that is a mash-up of innovation, arts, identity, sustainability, music, and social justice groups on campus. The day of festivities is one of the largest student-run events at the University and caps off with an evening charity concert bringing students together for an important cause. The Accolades Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in COMMUNITY ARTS ENGAGEMENT went to MUSIC Matters. MUSIC Matters is a student organization built to combine the power of music with the enthusiasm of college students to bring our campus together and make a difference in our community. In order to do so, MUSIC Matters hosts SpringFest each spring, a daylong festival that is a mash-up of innovation, arts, identity, sustainability, music, and social justice groups on campus. At SpringFest, student groups have the opportunity to partner with students, the broader University, and community partners to create engaging and meaningful projects. Some of these examples have included: MPowered’s annual MTank, the fashion communities’ collaborative fashion show, and a hands-on service drive presented by Circle K. The Accolades Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in FASHION went to BRONZE ELEGANCE. BRONZE ELEGANCE is a University of Michigan fashion organization built to promote self-expression through individuality, style, and culture. Their mission is to break down societal stereotypes with an annual show, in which, all proceeds go to a charitable cause and participating students are given the opportunity to display our campus diversity to the public.

The Accolades Award Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in FILM & VIDEO went to WOLV TV. WOLV TV is the only student-run television station at the University of Michigan. WOLV has a rich tradition of presenting news spanning from local campus news to international events in a manner accessible and interesting to students. In our state-of-the-art studio, students in WOLV TV have the opportunity to create incredible television from numerous roles. Whether behind the scenes filming, producing, or in front of the camera talent, students learn fundamental skills for television production.

The Accolades Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in VISUAL ARTS went to SHEI Magazine. SHEI Magazine is the official fashion, art, and culture magazine on campus. SHEI is one of four officially recognized Student Publications within the university. Entirely student-run, SHEI is comprised of both business and creative departments that handle all aspects of publication. SHEI Magazine creates professional-grade content that engages its audiences in current fashion trends and editorial styles unlike any other organization at the University of Michigan.

The E3W’s photoshopped infographics and images tackle national news stories, public figures, and campus life. The Every Three Weekly maintains a newspaper style design in all of its issues to enhance the humorous and satirical quality of its news-style content.

The Accolades award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC went to Michigan Pops Orchestra! The Michigan Pops Orchestra is the only student-run and student-directed orchestra on campus. Comprised of mostly non-music majors, the orchestra draws undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Each semester, the Pops Orchestra puts on a themed concert full of popular and classical music, crowd-pleasing antics, and other multimedia displays such as movies and lighting displays. The Accolades award for Outstanding Achievement by a Student Organization in VOCAL & ACAPPELLA MUSIC went to The Michigan Gentlemen, or G-Men for short! The G-Men are the premier all-male a-cappella group at the University of Michigan. They've been performing on campus and around the United States for more than twenty years and have made an incredible impact on not only a-cappella at U-M, but have effectively altered how the genre is performed and perceived. The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club wants you to submit lyrics for an original new “Michigan song,” which the members will premier in April 2017 to mark the University’s Bicentennial. Lyricists are invited to submit entries online between Sept. 1st - Nov. 15th. The winner will be announced by Dec. 15th.
