{"id":1437,"date":"2011-01-29T13:23:24","date_gmt":"2011-01-29T17:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www3.arts.umich.edu\/ink\/?p=1437"},"modified":"2011-02-01T12:40:57","modified_gmt":"2011-02-01T16:40:57","slug":"lego-medium-of-the-21st-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/2011\/01\/29\/lego-medium-of-the-21st-century\/","title":{"rendered":"Lego&#8211; Medium of the 21st century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I never actually possessed my own Legos when I was a kid; I only played with the ones my cousins had whenever I went to visit them for the summer.\u00c2\u00a0 Even then, though, I thought it was a difficult medium to work with,\u00c2\u00a0 I had such elaborate designs of houses and castl<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Sawaya Hands\" src=\"http:\/\/img.uphaa.com\/uploads\/730\/nohands.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"423\" \/>es in my head&#8230; and not enough<\/p>\n<p>time or Lego bricks to make them.\u00c2\u00a0 It was frustrating.\u00c2\u00a0 On the one hand, I did make do with the limited resources I had but on the other, I knew that my dreams of building a house with two wings or a building of five stories always lurked in the back of my head, waiting to be realized.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine how crazy I would have gone if I had nearly a million or more Legos!\u00c2\u00a0 I could have built sculptures!\u00c2\u00a0 And indeed, someone has.\u00c2\u00a0 Nathan Sawaya has become a Lego artist, building breathtaking and museum worthy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uphaa.com\/blog\/index.php\/lego-sculptures\/\">creations <\/a>from a childhood favorite medium.\u00c2\u00a0 While the designs are relatively simple-seeming, resembling enlarged and more sophisticated versions of childhood creations, they are also reminiscent of past sculptures from old masters.\u00c2\u00a0 Should Sawaya&#8217;s national tour be taken in by an art museum, would Rodin and others would be rolling in their graves, complaining about the nonsensical route classical art has taken in the new century?\u00c2\u00a0 Or would they applaud the innovative efforts of Sawaya to make Legos into more than just child&#8217;s play?<\/p>\n<p>Then again, innovative use of everyday objects wasn&#8217;t readily accepted when it first debuted with Marcel Duchamp&#8217;s satiric sculpture, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fountain_%28Duchamp%29\">Fountain<\/a>&#8220;, in which he turned over a urinal and submitted it to an art competition as a work of art.\u00c2\u00a0 I wonder what contemporary artists would have to say about Sawaya&#8217;s work as an artist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I never actually possessed my own Legos when I was a kid; I only played with the ones my cousins had whenever I went to visit them for the summer.\u00c2\u00a0 Even then, though, I thought it was a difficult medium to work with,\u00c2\u00a0 I had such elaborate designs of houses and castles in my head&#8230; [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1437"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1437"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1437\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1446,"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1437\/revisions\/1446"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1437"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1437"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1437"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
