I will not write a race poem<\/span><\/p>\n

So I\u2019ll liken the trees to brown sleeves<\/span><\/p>\n

With leaves tracing a pattern reaching\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Toward hearts<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I will not write a love poem\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So I\u2019ll imagine backpacks\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

pushing back against lower backs\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aching for a release\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I will not write a disorder poem<\/span><\/p>\n

So I\u2019ll write about food\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Itching to be eaten\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To enter a full stomach\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ll write about the mind\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cautiously telling a cautionary tale<\/span><\/p>\n

About candy and obesity and health\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While also singing songs and admonitions about body positivity Fighting and unlearning the things taught by tv screens I\u2019ll write about life and regret and wonder why Why we just have to keep trying and keep fighting and\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Think of that as fun. In writing to the mind I\u2019ll again and again call attention to how it\u2019s all about your mindset and yet somehow I can never quite get my mind to set. I’ll remember that hunger means you need to drink more water and hunger means you want something so you need to keep going but hunger is never satisfied. In race, I\u2019ll remember that every day is a race against time against each other against my own That there is this pressure to be the first the first the first when white people just get to live<\/span><\/p>\n
