WERE I TO WAKE\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In my memory lives a vast oak\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

hanging one low, peeled branch\u2014 sticking out like a sore thumb<\/span><\/p>\n

upon which a thrill seeker once tied a muddled rope swing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My brother who is not my brother\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

but an old friend tethered at the soul\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

skips rocks across the bank of the Dead River.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We rode our bikes there after class,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

his a rusted Schwinn and mine\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

a no brand hand-me-down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is an innocence in not thinking twice\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

about whether a thrown stone\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

might thrash a friend cascading from above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some time has passed now\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

and we haven\u2019t talked in a way that matters\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

for too long a while.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Were I to wake on this vacant night\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

it would surely be that I dreamt of the way\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
