Autumn’s Exhale\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I took my first breath in the middle of autumn.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the years that followed I held it there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stuck somewhere in my throat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This time of year breeds a certain panic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I can feel its motion as I watch people<\/span><\/p>\n

rush from class to class.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving in straight lines\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

eyes straightforward<\/span><\/p>\n

or straight down.<\/span><\/p>\n

A motion I clumsily follow<\/span><\/p>\n

as I tilt my neck up to the sky,<\/span><\/p>\n

Watching as the maroons and mustard yellows<\/span><\/p>\n

descend neatly to the floor to join\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

their brothers and sisters.<\/span><\/p>\n

I like feeling them under my boots.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their crunch a sign of the larger\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

crisp cold that hangs in the air.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cold that I can feel at the base of my lungs,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

replacing the bright summer sun\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I once carried in my chest.<\/span><\/p>\n

A cold wind I often confuse for either fear or excitement<\/span><\/p>\n

Only discernible by the speed of entry.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the season where I rest between this dichotomy<\/span><\/p>\n

Of glee and fright\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of life and death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anxiety brings with it possibility\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A future unknown and unseen.<\/span><\/p>\n

I hold my breath waiting for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoping one day to be born again\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
