{"id":4792,"date":"2014-02-20T17:25:44","date_gmt":"2014-02-20T21:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arts.umich.edu\/ink\/?p=4792"},"modified":"2014-02-20T17:25:44","modified_gmt":"2014-02-20T21:25:44","slug":"art-of-of-being-basic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/2014\/02\/20\/art-of-of-being-basic\/","title":{"rendered":"Art of of Being Basic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">\n1) Writing a passive aggressive blog, keeping in mind all the people that overwhelm you&#8211;with their ability to frustrate you, fuck everything up, and be real damn basic.<\/p>\n<p>2) Quitting your thesis to basically watch a season of Gilmore Girls every two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>3) Not living by your community\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s living standards and then shunning\/hating\/abusing \u00c2\u00a0those that called you out about it.<\/p>\n<p>4) Standing up and feeling patriotic for a nation that allows for the active genocide of people in and out of its \u00e2\u20ac\u0153borders.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>5) (un\/in)tentionally Cutting off Black women during a speak out because you really want to share your (yes, valid) emotions.<\/p>\n<p>6) Walking down the wrong side of the road and pushing someone without boots into 6 inches of water.<\/p>\n<p>7) Saying \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Arabic\u00e2\u20ac\u009d when you really mean \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Arab\u00e2\u20ac\u009d all while basically making a joke of another culture because of a situation you found yourself in.<\/p>\n<p>8) Saying \u00e2\u20ac\u0153people of color\u00e2\u20ac\u009d instead of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Black folks,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which is really what you mean.<\/p>\n<p>9) Ordering off of your parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Amazon account just so you can get free 2 day shipping (and effectively avoiding the spending of your own money).<\/p>\n<p>10) Quoting Frank B. Wilderson III and then talking over Black folks in a conversation; Quoting Frank B. Wilderson III and then calling yourself an ally to Black folks when you are in fact not Black; Quoting Jared Sexton and then non-ironically saying \u00e2\u20ac\u0153multiracial\u00e2\u20ac\u009d; Quoting Audre Lorde and just fucking it up bad because you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t read the whole quote, or you forget the context, or forget that she is talking about something that can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t always be generalized or abstracted; Saying that you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like <em>Beloved<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>11) Assuming that because you call yourself an ally to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153LGBT\u00e2\u20ac\u009d people you are an ally to queer folks; assuming that because you \u00e2\u20ac\u0153identify as the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dca\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 in LGBTA\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that you are really an ally or really living the struggle of being \u00e2\u20ac\u0153LGBT.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>12) Being a (white) scholar of South African tribal literatures and then calling \u00e2\u20ac\u0153anti-Blackness\u00e2\u20ac\u009d too strong of a term; ignoring the fact that global anti-Blackness is a thing.<\/p>\n<p>13) Working in the office next to me, seeing me everyday in the hallway, but refuse to acknowledge my existence as you run into me because you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re too busy on your phone, refuse to say excuse me, refuse to say anything.<\/p>\n<p>14) Any time the word \u00e2\u20ac\u0153different\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is used as an adjective.<\/p>\n<p>15) (On the second night of a newly established gay night at a local bar) Hosting a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153frat party\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that depicts racism, sexism, sizeism, ableism, etc., in its cover photo.<\/p>\n<p>16) Refusing to acknowledge the privilege you have in passing.<\/p>\n<p>17) Wearing shorts in 35 degree weather, even if it is sunny.<\/p>\n<p>18) Disliking Azealia Banks.<\/p>\n<p>19) Flirting with someone majoring in English and Philosophy and telling them that you hate reading and thinking too hard.<\/p>\n<p>20) Pronouncing my last name \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Portabella\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to be funny.<\/p>\n<p>21) Being sex negative.<\/p>\n<p>22) Calling yourself a feminist, <em>as a man<\/em>, and still using \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bitch\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in your everyday vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>22) Identifying as cisgender and gay\/bisexual\/lesbian and stigmatizing Trans* folks.
