{"id":671,"date":"2010-04-08T22:27:18","date_gmt":"2010-04-09T02:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www3.arts.umich.edu\/ink\/?p=671"},"modified":"2010-04-08T22:27:18","modified_gmt":"2010-04-09T02:27:18","slug":"modern-museums-experiment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/2010\/04\/08\/modern-museums-experiment\/","title":{"rendered":"Modern Museums: Experiment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marrying ideas of statistical analysis and museum studies, I would like to propose an experiment.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope to work in museum education in my future, so to get the ball rolling I will start hypothesizing now.<\/p>\n<p>The present museum\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s status quo of label design is an easily visible label tattooed next to the artifact.\u00c2\u00a0 The label usually contains roughly 300 words and articulates a particular message about the piece.\u00c2\u00a0 It will tell you when the artifact was made, the artist, its significance, and an interpretation of the work.\u00c2\u00a0 This is a pretty standard label.<\/p>\n<p>What I would like to question is what if that label was removed all together?\u00c2\u00a0 What would happen to the exhibit?\u00c2\u00a0 What would be lost and\/or gained?<\/p>\n<p>Coming from an educational standpoint I am interested in testing the status quo in order to find new possibilities and perspectives.\u00c2\u00a0 On average, people spend 30 seconds or less reading a wall label.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not a lot of time to retain information.\u00c2\u00a0 I see the educational benefits for wall labels and I am not saying we should omit them from museums, but I would like to test the effects of a wall less exhibit.\u00c2\u00a0 What could be learned from them?<\/p>\n<p>Not having conducted this test, I will make up a set of hypothesized results.\u00c2\u00a0 I think people will gain a sense of independence and agency while walking through the exhibit.\u00c2\u00a0 They will interpret, imagine, and wonder instead of being instructed.\u00c2\u00a0 The experience will be like entering a fantasy world.\u00c2\u00a0 Furthermore, individual interpretations could and very well would lead to varying perspectives, offering different vantage points and new categories for meaning.\u00c2\u00a0 The artifacts would enter a new realm of thought.\u00c2\u00a0 The possibilities are endless because the amount of traffic is such.<\/p>\n<p>The modern museum has taken on the role of education and entertainment.\u00c2\u00a0 An exhibit surrounded by freedom of thought and interpretation would facilitate wonder and self-expressionism. \u00c2\u00a0Isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t that what art\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all about?<\/p>\n<p>Have a good weekend!<\/p>\n<p>Sara majors in Art History and enjoys long walks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marrying ideas of statistical analysis and museum studies, I would like to propose an experiment.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope to work in museum education in my future, so to get the ball rolling I will start hypothesizing now.
