{"id":8974,"date":"2018-02-06T11:50:45","date_gmt":"2018-02-06T15:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/?p=8974"},"modified":"2018-02-05T18:23:37","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T22:23:37","slug":"winter-olympics-2018-curling-speed-skating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/2018\/02\/06\/winter-olympics-2018-curling-speed-skating\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Olympics 2018: Curling, Speed Skating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8976 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/speed-skating-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/speed-skating-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/artsatmichigan.umich.edu\/ink\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/speed-skating.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea starts this Thursday. \u00a0The Winter Olympics has less sports than the Summer Olympics and with it a smaller audience. \u00a0The names of the sports of curling and speed skating are well known, yet their rules are not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curling is a team sport that is played on a sheet of ice. \u00a0Most people compare curling to shuffle board, only on the ice and with a team. \u00a0The teams of four players push a 40 pound granite rock down the ice and try to get it as close to a target as possible. \u00a0Two teams compete against each other, and the team who gets closest to the target wins. \u00a0One player throws the rock and the others sweep in front of it to try and help the rock keep straight and hit the target. \u00a0If no one swept in front of the rock then the rock would curl, or veer left and right. \u00a0The sweeping keeps the rock straight. \u00a0Each team throws sixteen rocks, with each player throwing twice. \u00a0Scoring the game is the team who has more rocks closer to the center than the other team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people hear the sport of speed skating \u00a0they think that it is pretty self explanatory. \u00a0Speed skating is essentially track on ice with players skating around the ice arena at different distances. \u00a0The races are separated between men and women with 7 different events, 5 individual, 1 team pursuit and 1 mass start. \u00a0The team pursuit is when three athletes start on opposite sides of the oval and skate six or eight laps. \u00a0The winning team is the team who has all three athletes cross first. \u00a0The winning team moves on to the next round and the losing team is eliminated. \u00a0The mass start event is a sixteen lap race where all 24 athletes race at once instead of only having two athletes racing in elimination style. \u00a0Mass starts also have sprint points which athletes can gain during laps four, eight, twelve, and sixteen. \u00a0In each of these laps the top three finishers get extra points. \u00a0These points are added to the points that the first, second, and third place athlete get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Winter 2018 Olympics are starting in less than a week and there are many sports to watch that are not always in the spotlight. \u00a0Curling and speed skating are two of them that will be in the spotlight over the next two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea starts this Thursday. \u00a0The Winter Olympics has less sports than the Summer Olympics and with it a smaller audience. \u00a0The names of the sports of curling and speed skating are well known, yet their rules are not.
