Indonesian Students Association at Umich

About

Formerly PERMIAS, or the Indonesian Students' Association in America. We are a supportive community for fellow Indonesian students and families in the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area, as well as an agent to promote Indonesian culture. The organization consists of eight executive board members that function, facilitate, and oversee events that help Indonesian students adjust to American culture like the Thanksgiving Dinner, Factory Outlet Trip, and Graduation Night, celebrate traditional Indonesian festivals like Batik Day, Indonesian Independence Day, and Chinese New Year, and display our unique culture to the U of M community through our annual Indonesian Cultural Night. PERMIAS is also part of the Southeast Asian Network, which aims to foster good relationship with other Southeast Asian student organizations and promote our collective culture.

Dindamilenia Choirunnisa Hardiyasanti, Indonesian Students Association at Umich

The Indonesian Cultural Night (ICN) 2025 featured the theme "Rhythms of Archipelago: The Face of Indonesia", aiming to showcase the vibrant diversity of Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke and encouraging the audience to showcase theirs. The event included traditional music performances such as the gamelan, and traditional dances such as Ratoe Jaroh, Sajojo, and Balinese dances, each representing different aspects of Indonesian culture such as unity, compassion, spirit, and bravery. Other than presenting the traditional costume of Indonesia, the audience was invited to wear their own traditional costume for a contest. Finally, a play centered on RA Kartini, an Indonesian feminist icon, highlighted her advocacy for women's education and its relevance to modern life, particularly in the context of equal educational opportunities for women today.

This was a vibrant cultural showcase featuring a unique performance of an Indonesian folktale, infused with humor to captivate the University of Michigan student body. This theatrical piece was a delightful introduction to Indonesian culture. Accompanying the play, they hosted an interactive Kahoot quiz focusing on Indonesian trivia, aiming to educate and engage the audience in a fun, interactive manner. Additionally, they presented a performance featuring traditional Indonesian instruments, offering a melodious glimpse into rich Indonesian musical heritage. To complete the cultural immersion, attendees were treated to an array of complimentary Indonesian cuisine, providing a taste of our diverse culinary traditions. This blend of arts and education was an enriching and entertaining experience for all participants.

Indonesian Culture Night

March 9th 2018
Samantha Tinor, PERMIAS

The annual Indonesian Cultural Night (ICN) presented a variety of Indonesian performances ranging from dramas inspired by local folk tales, Indonesian instrumental performances, and traditional dances from multiple parts of the country. The performances and the visual arts elements (e.g. backdrop and promotional media) were performed/done by students, regardless of prior background in the arts, promoting learning of the Indonesian arts to the audiences and also to volunteers through intensive rehearsals that embodied the country's culture through the arts. This year, the event was a more interactive experience with attendees invited to dance and/or sing with performers. The theme ("Dari Sabang Sampai Merauke" - an Indonesian expression for the diversity of Indonesia) was particularly special in that it celebrated the multiculturalism of the country. By showing performances that are culturally and aesthetically distinct from each other, the multiculturalism of Indonesia could be seen as a microcosm of the multiculturalism of the campus and world.
