Student Film Festival Project

About

Our club hosts a short film festival for the students at Michigan. The final festival operates through teams of contestants who enter. At the start of the timeline for creating films, the students will be given random rules that they must follow for their film, outlining a necessary character, genre, role, line, and prop that they must incorporate into their film. The groups will then have a short period to develop a short film based off of these prompts that they get. During this time they must write a script, find locations to shoot, record, edit, and submit their entry. The films are going to be played in a booked auditorium on the festival date. At the end of the showing, the audience will be have ranked choice voting to determine the prize winning teams. The goal of this event is to showcase Michigan student’s creativity and ability to work under time pressure with preset rules that they must follow. We want to showcase the work of the student body and reward those who go above and beyond. This will be a good opportunity for some students to begin to develop and have work that they have done outside of a class and gives experience in working both in high pressure situations and as a team. Of course, we also want to emphasize that the event will be fun for all - those who are creating the actual short films and those who choose to go and support their friends or see the work that their peers have worked hard on creating.

Student Film Festival Project

November 14th 2024
Porter Selfridge, Student Film Festival Project

This student mini-grant supported the Student Film Festival Project, a 10 day short film festival held at University of Michigan. Each year, students sign up either individually or in teams for a filmmaking contest and receive a series of prompts and 10 days to write, direct, and edit a short film! Teams created their films and the Student Film Festival Project hosted a screening for all the films made during the process, which were then voted on that night. Students were able to collaborate creatively and celebrate the results with their fellow students in an engaging and fun way.
