Crochet for Conservation: VIPs Club

About

Did you know the fast fashion industry is expected to use 35% more land by 2030? That's 115 MILLION hectares of space that will be taken away from wild animals' habitat, all so that we can have our giant Shein hauls of cheap clothes that we wear once or twice and send to the landfill within a year. Fast fashion is one of the biggest threats to the rainforests and their biodiversity, but a threat that we do have a fighting chance at stopping.VIPs (Very Important Primates) is a new club that will meet once a week to crochet, knit, bead, sew, embroider, etc., (basically whatever your talent is or whatever talent you wish to learn) so we can create garments that have an eco-friendly life cycle to combat fast fashion. As opposed to cheap fabrics made of plastics that take thousands of years to decompose and rely on modern slave labor to produce, we source sustainable yarns made of natural fibers that can biodegrade in mere months, should their owner choose to dispose of them. On top of that, since we start from scratch, we get to design all our garments, too!!We will sell these clothes, stuffed toys, bags, hats, etc. through VIPs Fund, a nonprofit I've created for this exact purpose. So far, VIPs Fund has a website and I do most of its business through there and in person but once the school year starts we will also sell at the Kerrytown Sunday Artisan Market and open an Etsy shop.In addition to the organization's model being built to fight fast fashion, 100% of profits are donated to various conservation groups that are working to save endangered primates and prosimians around the globe. So far, we have donated to Ny Tanintsika in Madagascar, Borneo Nature Foundation in Indonesia, and the Gorilla Project in central Africa. Join C4C and you can help make decisions about how our donations will help animals in the wild! (YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CROCHET TO JOIN, WE WILL HAVE LEARNING WORKSHOPS)Membership is open to anyone who is interested in wildlife conservation, fiber art, fashion design, sewing, jewelry, nonprofit work, website building, marketing, advocacy, or any other skill you think would further the mission of Crochet for Conservation and VIPs Fund.
