Thus Spoke Ann Arbor, a Chinese theater club at the University of Michigan, strives to promote Chinese language and Chinese culture through the lens of theater and create a home-like culture for our members. The club has 61 members and holds 2 major theater performing events each year. For their Spring 2018 show, they presented the Chinese drama “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land,†which combined two unrelated plays – a tragedy (Secret Love) and a comedy (The Peach Blossom Land) – on the same stage, mixing seriousness with banter. With their version of the play, Thus Spoke Ann Arbor hoped to address issues of time and space, transformation between generations, and translation between languages and cultures.
