Carillon Guild at the University of Michigan

About

The Carillon Guild at the University of Michigan is available to play the bells in Burton or Lurie Towers for events and private tours!ABOUT USWe are a voluntary student organization (VSO) for carillon (bell-playing) enthusiasts in Ann Arbor, which means our membership consists of students, local community members, and alumni of the studio/Guild. We meet and play for each other weekly, learn our own music in addition to what’s assigned in academic lessons, host tours of our bell towers, and travel both regionally and internationally to visit new carillons. MISSION AND PURPOSEOur mission is to generate awareness of the carillon, create and embed carillon culture into mainstream University of Michigan life, and empower students to take ownership of the carillon spaces, both physical and sonic. The Guild is established for the expressed purpose of engaging our community at the University of Michigan (U-M) and beyond with the carillons at U-M and to provide a space where individuals both in the academic studio and outside of it can be substantively involved with the instrument. We strive to cultivate musical technique and expression on the instrument with the intention of performing monthly concerts on the Ann Arbor campus and at regional, national, and international bell towers.ABOUT THE CARILLONA carillon consists of a series of at least 23 tuned bells, played from a keyboard that allows expressiveness through variation in touch. We have two on campus, in Burton Memorial Tower (Central Campus) and in Lurie Tower (North Campus). Both instruments are played each weekday by professors, students, and community members.
