# Warning! Spoilers!

Welcome to the review of a performance that I think I will remember for the longest time. Was it the best play ever? I liked it, but I have yet many to come that I haven’t seen yet, so it’s hard to say – so how can I say that I will remember it the most? Because I’m pretty sure that there won’t be many plays where I’m invited to the stage!

The play started with the mimes of the actors where the construction workers were actually building a house. First, it was a steel frame that looked like more of an art exhibition than a house. Then, they started adding walls, doors, and other appliances and wow, it worked! Personally, I was impressed that they managed to make a working tab on stage – where would the water supply have come from? After the house was physically constructed, the actors started to make it a ‘home’ by acting out daily life situations on stage – showering, sleeping, and displaying different emotions. The actors had diverse ethnicity and age, and they acted out different family/friends relationships among them. After the house was mostly constructed, they moved in and out of view through all sorts of places, including the refrigerator and the closet in the wall! The stage design was so interesting to design the route of actors in such a way. There were also light and sound effects to make the construction really seem like home – my favorite was the one where they created night and day by moving a bright light source from the bottom to the top of the stage, hidden away from the audience’s view, to mimic sunlight. The light was a warm yellow-orange color just like the morning sun and it draw long shadows against the structure of the house. That shadow made the scene look so cozy and peaceful, representing the warmth of a home.

The play got more interesting when a young boy actor put on a mask and came down the stage to invite an audience to the stage. He suddenly became the host of the house and greeted every actor as they showed up with gifts to a party hosted in the house. I was wondering if he was an actor secretly in disguise as the audience because everything was so smooth, but my curiosity was solved soon after as I was invited to the stage as well! The boy showed up with a wine and asked me whether I like a party. I said yes and boom! I was wearing a Santa costume and dancing around the stage. The secret was that the actors were giving instructions to the audience on stage. More than 30 people came upstage throughout the show. I’ve never seen anything like it-it was really an innovative performance.

In all, I think the play nailed its proposal to show what a home is consisted of – physical structure, coziness, old personal items, people living and interacting in it with diverse emotions, stories, and memories. Each was explored without breaking up the flow of the performance and delivered vividly. They were emphasized in the last scene where they were gone and only a fan and ripped plastic cloths were flailing in the wind – the emptiness showed that they were what’s making a house a home. Even without the audience coming up stage, this performance was highly delightful to watch and wonder, yet coming up stage made the event more special. Don’t miss your chance if it hits Ann Arbor again. I HIGHLY recommend this performance.

PREVIEW: Moonlight Film Screening OSCAR WINNER

February is Black History Month, but that doesn’t mean appreciation of Black History has to be contained in that single month.

On March 7th, there will be a FREE screening of the Oscar-winning film Moonlight at Hatcher Grad Library.

Mahershala Ali won an Oscar for his role in this film, which follows the life of a young black man as he makes the transition from child to adult in Miami.

 

REVIEW: Hijabi Monologues

These women, and many more, shared various aspects of their life this past Friday night in the Rackham Ampitheatre. Although their backgrounds were diverse, these women shared the identity of being Muslim women who practiced the hijab: a modest lifestyle that includes wearing the veil.

Halfway Hijabi: Hijabi Monologues was a safe space created by sophomores Fatima Haidar and Alyiah Al-Bonijim. These students felt the tension towards Muslims after last year’s election and felt that Muslims, particularly hijabis, needed a space to showcase who they are. This would allow Muslim women to be seen in another light, rather than have the media paint a picture of Muslims for Americans. What Fatima and Alyiah thought to be a small get-together, however, was anything but.

I arrived twenty minutes before seven and found a seat in the third row of the theatre. People trickled in as I made small talk with those around me, but by 7:15PM the room was packed: doors were blocked by a wall of students while others sat on the floor of the stage. Attendees included Muslims and non-Muslims and people of various ethnic backgrounds. After several complaints from security, everyone finally settled in and the monologues began.

Each hijabi—a Muslim woman who practices the hijab—who presented in the safe space had something unique about them that they shared with the audience. Students were moved to tears when U-M alum Dana sang “Hallelujah.” The room was filled with laughter as Malaysian student Anati shared comical moments of her life, of why she decided to practice the hijab. For each story, the audience gave a roaring applause for the courage that the hijabis presented when they were on the stage.

Shortly after the monologues was dessert, where presenters and audience members got to sit together and converse while eating sweets. New friends were made that night, and I was no exception to that.
I was glad to have been able to go to this event last Friday, to listen to the stories of such wonderful people, and would definitely stay on the lookout for more safe space events to come!

 

 

PREVIEW: ASA Culture Show – Sister Africa

The African Students Association (ASA) is putting on its 17th Annual Culture Show and this year’s theme is “Sister Africa,” where they will be showcasing Africa across borders.

In the words of the group: ” We hope that people leave the show with a better understanding and appreciation for Africa and a renewed hope for unification of its descendants from around the world.”

What you can look forward to:

  • Foxy P from African Comedians will host the show.
  • Fashion Designers from all over the USA showcasing their work
  • Performers including: ASA’s Amala Dancers, Oga Boys, Brazilian Capoeira dancers, and Zuzu Acrobats
  • Poetry, singing and instrumental ensembles!

REVIEW: Detroit Symphony Orchestra plays “Firebird”

On Saturday night, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra delivered an energetic program consisting of Strauss’s Don Juan, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Connession’s Cosmic Trilogy, and Stavinsky’s “Firebird” suite. Maestro Robert Treviño led the orchestra with much enthusiasm, and the audience was able to absorb that energy quite well.

Special shoutout goes to the violinist and concertmaster Yoonshin Song and the entire wind section. Ms. Song brought life to each and every phrase of Prokofiev’s tricky solo line. The orchestra supported her by accompanying her expressively and applauding after the performance, which attested to her leadership ability and trust she gains from the orchestra for her personality.

In addition to the concertmaster, this program highlighted the strength of the DSO’s wind section as a whole. As a wind player myself, I always experience the difficulty of working with such a large section to make one cohesive sound. Stravinsky’s “Firebird” Suite (1919) is a perfect piece to showcase their unity. “Firebird” features each principal player’s virtuosity as a solo player, but it also requires everyone in the section to create the “winds” sound — which they did very well.

But today, I also want to comment on something else that was on my mind during this performance.

I headed over to this concert after an entire day spent at the SphinxCon, the conference intended to spark conversations about inclusion and diversity in arts. For three days, participants like myself were able to listen to many empowering speakers and panelists that worked actively to disturb the dominant narratives and let the minorities’ voices be heard — whether it be race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, indigenous affiliation, (dis)ability status, or otherwise. Then, I looked at the stage in the Orchestra Hall. The majority of the orchestra is white, and the largest racial minority group represented is Asian. There are a couple of Black musicians on stage, but this makeup surely does not represent the population of Detroit.

I have heard of DSO’s efforts to actively include the Detroit community, through frequent live streaming, ticket promotions, and local, more affordable performances. As “a community-supported orchestra,” DSO puts a lot of work into inclusion. However, the reality is rough. Classical music, or any art for that matter, is very expensive to maintain and present, yet making the tickets more expensive would exclude many, many populations. Pursuing arts as a career often takes economic stability, which is not something that everyone has. How do you disrupt that? …That’s the question that looms over the minds of many artists, arts organizations, stakeholders, and leaders.

By coming to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s concert to conclude my busy Saturday, I was able to synthesize a lot of information that I absorbed from the SphinxCon. These thoughts are always work in progress. Maybe one day, we can see the same program performed with an orchestra and an audience that represents the population makeup of the community…

REVIEW: FUSION OF CULTURES

Although it got off to a bit of a slow start, Fusion of Cultures soon picked up and jumped around quickly from one act to another. In an effort to keep people around until the end, the schedule of events was hidden from the audience, but I kind of liked the uncertainty, especially since I didn’t gain anything by knowing who was up next.

First of all, the food. There was a range of Hispanic, Middle Eastern, and African cuisine, and let’s just make it clear that all of it was absolutely delicious. There may be a variety of finals breakfasts and meals around campus, but this kind of food is rare and should be cherished. I drank a sweet Mango Lassi while munching on fried plantains, refried beans and hummus, to name a few of the dishes that I can remember.

The best part about the food was that it was not even the best part. We (the audience) watched a number of dance routines juxtaposed with poetry readings, videos, and even a fashion show.

As I’m sure we were supposed to see, the variety of cultures that we saw were surprisingly similar. Yes the exact dance moves differed, but all of them had an invigorating, sophisticated quality that one does not normally see at a frat party.

Furthermore, the poetry read was heated, especially in the weak of recent national tragedies. It is a sad fact that much of what we heard was characterized by oppression and discrimination, but that is the truth of our world for people other than white heterosexual males.

Best of all, I think, the room was packed. This season has been especially filled with protests and anger in our society, and Fusion of Cultures was a reminder of why we want and need to celebrate diversity in the United States. Throughout the night I watched dozens of talented individuals perform for a packed room and everyone was enjoying their evening. To me, that fit perfectly with the name of the event.
