Little is known about the origins of the musical artist known as Slow Magic, he wears a colorful animal mask and never refers to his own name.

In an interview last year with D Magazine, Slow Magic said this about his anonymous status:

“… the reason I wanted it to be this way from the start was that so people get focused on the music before they focus on a state or a location or a story,” he says. “I wanted to challenge the way music could be presented. I’m not the first anonymous musician but it’s fun for me to try and figure out things sometimes with other bands and other musicians too.”

Slow Magic came to The Blind Pig last year and put on a very good show. His beats are creative and highly conducive to dancing the night away.

I don’t know this band all that well. Was introduced to them back in high school, around 2007.

Ty Segall: Enduring Neck Pain, Crowd Surfing and Epic Mosh Pits

Described to me by a friend as “the hardest working musician right now,” Ty Segall has come out with 3 albums in the last year and tours continuously, spreading his skills and sound around the country.

I personally hadn’t had much exposure to him before his show at The Blind Pig on the night of Thursday February 6th 2013. The evening was relatively cold and The Pig was PACKED. My friends and I arrived around 10:30, doors opened at 9:00pm.
We Heard:
Ex-Cults; fun, indi, energetic (female bassist)

K-Holes; who are very punk/ grunge/ sca sounding, attractive musicians

The Mosh-Pit started during the K-Holes. The energy people were throwing about was quite contagious. No injuries occurred and we all created a nice dynamic with the bands, showing our appreciation through sweat and perhaps some blood and tears. There was a good amount of crowd surfing and a couple essential articles of clothing were lost in the fray.
Over the course of the night each band provided their own level of excitement. Although many of us were antsy to hear Ty, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the opening acts and was nicely oiled up for Ty’s smack-down blowout performance when the time came.
Although it was an enjoyable evening all in all, I found it difficult to appreciate the quality of Ty’s musical skills due to the level of physical disruption going on around me. I look forward to experiencing his music more in other contexts and will be physically preparing for his next tour through Ann Arbor.

Preview: Matthew Dear – Concert for the Masses, or the Minimum.

The Blind Pig has done it again! We are so lucky to have this incredible concert venue in the heart of Ann Arbor.

Matthew Dear:

Matthew Dear might not be for everyone. Their earlier sound can be more “obscure” and ethereal than his most recent album “Beams.” Some of their music is danceable and some of it begs for a smokey room, a strong drink and a fuzzy brain. Depending on your mood.

I was first introduced to this artist earlier this fall by a friend on the West Coast. The composition and creativity of sound is what drew him to this group. They are from Michigan (a graduate of u-mich in fact) which I was also unaware of when first introduced to their music.

Although not everyone is going to like Matthew Dear’s particular creative style, check out some of their stuff and stretch the boundaries of your music experience!

Preview: El Ten Eleven: Post Rockin, Double Necking

This LA duo, El Ten Eleven, is coming to The Blind Pig on Saturday October 20th 9pm. $10 in advance, $12 at the door. 18+
Their sound is entirely musical, no vocals. Very rhythmic, using drums, keyboard, fretless, double necked bass and loop pedal in innovative ways to create a physically and mentally captivating sound. They are beautiful to watch and amazing to listen to. I highly recommend checking this group out after the Michigan State game on Saturday!
