MediaScape Musings # 14 : My Photographic Journey Inspired by Zhong Lin: Celebrating “Soulscape” – My Solo Exhibition

In the realm of art and photography, few talents have captivated me as profoundly as Zhong Lin who shot a lot of cover photos for Vogue. It was her mesmerizing work that not only ignited my passion for artistic photography but also served as the catalyst for my own creative journey. Today, I stand at a pivotal moment in my career, reflecting on the journey that has led me to host my very own solo photography exhibition, “Soulscape.”

Zhong Lin’s unique vision and unparalleled creativity transcend the ordinary, transforming everyday scenes into extraordinary pieces of art. It was this transformational power of her photography that inspired me to pick up a camera and explore the world through my lens. Her ability to capture the essence of a moment, to tell stories that evoke emotion and provoke thought, has been a guiding light in my own exploration of artistic photography.

Over the past year and a half, I have dedicated myself to honing my craft, drawing inspiration from the beauty that surrounds us and the intricate emotions that connect us. This journey of self-discovery and artistic expression has culminated in the creation of “Soulscape” – my solo photography exhibition.

“Soulcape” is a collection of my work that seeks to explore the depths of human emotion and the connection between the soul and the natural world. Each photograph in the exhibition is a reflection of my journey, an exploration of the themes that have resonated with me deeply throughout my creative process.

As the exhibition draws to a close, I am filled with a mix of emotions. I am grateful for the inspiration and guidance Zhong Lin’s work has provided me; pride, in seeing my own vision come to life; and excitement, for the future paths my photographic journey will take.

I invite you to experience “Soulscape” before it concludes. Your presence would not only mean the world to me but also offer you a glimpse into the emotions and stories I have sought to capture through my lens.

[ Horned crawlers are members of the Kheprian crawler family, small armored creatures native to Khepri-1b. They are omnivorous, with their diet ranging from small larvae and eggs that they dig out of the soil to tubers of the deep-rooted brush in the darkgrass plains of the planet's terminator zone. ]

Witness the Small Life – Battle Royale

All is fair in lunch and war!

As the great OK Go stated (more or less) twas a week full of upside downs and inside outs indeed! From beautiful skies to devious windchill, not only has the weather been a rollercoaster but so has my to-do list. It’s felt like I’ve simultaneously had nothing to do while having nothing to do and vice versa. I’ve been jumping from place to place every which way, but in between all of this commotion there’s been some great moments of rest, relaxation, and rollicking!

With our first full week back in the full swing of things, there were a few big moments! Most of all I had my work shown in my first college art show thank to the newly formed club The Stampede on campus. Whether you draw, paint, sculpt, write, or anything in between, consider submitting your work for their next show! It was amazing to not only see my work among so many other beautiful pieces but also talk to and celebrate with other art majors and non-art majors alike.

Some other highlights of this week: Celebrating my friend’s birthday with balloon guests and Spirited Away, (badly) playing a Tekken Tournament and singing along to YouTube karaoke with friends, and in general doing SO much more drawing everyday!

To take into our next week:

Ins: Telling people you think they’re awesome, the color green, admitting defeat (in a cordial manner), mismatched socks, Wisconsin cheese, using the word awesome!

Outs: Impulsive spending, forgetting to floss, watching really bad TV shows just to have something on in the background, chipping at nail polish, forgetting to bring a hat on really cold night walks home from the library.

Happy (or not so happy) Daylight Savings to you all and let us all hope for some more permanent blue skies ahead of us!

Capturing Campus: March

Corporeal Cloud
if you look too long at the sky
you’ll fall in
plunging deep in the pocket
between times and spaces
that weren’t there yesterday
to steal your breath and the blood
in your bones a talisman for the justification
the gathering of your insides
in vague palms like cotton candy mounds
flossing between windowsills and rooftop shingles
a corporeal cloud
which is all too much
until you feel your feet on the ground

Chapter 3

Hello! This week I took pictures of my day on Thursday, March 7th, as a piano performance major.

9:30-10:30

I started the day with my Theory 140- Aural Skills Class. We focused on the Cadential 6/4- chords that usually appear at the end of the music that outlines the dominant scale degree. The dominant of a key is the fifth note, and the cadential 6/4 uses it to lead into the ending (cadence). Additionally, in this class, we sang chord progressions to highlight how each chord resolves.

12:30-1:30

I then had my weekly lesson with Professor Harding. I continued to work on Chopin Ballade No. 3. This is one of my favorite pieces to play because there is so much intensity and beautiful moments. I also find it amazing how the lessons I learn in my theory classes start to apply to my pieces when I think about chords and notes.

3:00-4:00

I headed  over to central campus for my French class. I had an exam today about travel preferences.

4:30-6:30

I went back to the School Of Music to attend studio class, a weekly class featuring performances from other piano performance majors. This week, I was the first one to play. I performed Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in G Minor from Book 1. While I was a little nervous, I am glad with how I performed.

6:30

I finish my day with practicing. Earlier today, I took a picture of the geese in the water while entering the School of Music. It was raining, but I found this moment so beautiful. When playing my pieces during my practice time, I thought about this image and incorporated the beauty of it to my playing.

Frivolous Fairy Tales: Vivian Virtue Part I

There once was a woman named Vivian Virtue who lived in a pretty three-story apartment complex. And much to the horror of her older neighbors, Vivian was seen every night with a new man linking their arm with hers. The first week that the neighbors had noticed her habit they’d press their ears against shared walls, floors, or ceilings, wondering at the absence of unbecoming sounds they’d expected from an exuberant young woman such as her. After the first week of shameless snooping, they gave it up and went on with their lives. Only occasionally, if they ever crossed paths with her in a stairwell or hallway with a man attached to her hip, would they send her way a sneer of disgust. Thus, Vivian’s notoriety was cemented by her lack of Virtue.

One day, however, 60-year-old Martha who shared a wall with Vivian, was woken with a start. A loud thud had echoed from right beside her bed. Then came the muffled moans. It took a while for her to understand what was going on when her face was overcome by a deep flush. She was scandalized and vexed. Vivian was a fiend, Martha had always known, but she had simply ignored the fact since the young lady had never exhibited her loose behavior. However, now that she had, Martha finally had her chance to give a harsh lecture to the young lady. One that she had been preparing since that first week of Vivian’s man-trapping days.

Yes, Martha thought, it was time the youth learned a thing or two about propriety.
