PREVIEW: Master’s Recital–Jordan Smith on Flute

Like the Pied Piper leading all the rats out of town with his captivating music, so will Jordan Smith untangle us from our parents’ hair and on back to school.

Allow yourself to drift back into the grind with the gift of flute music to make the process easier. Jordan Smith will be putting on his master’s recital, playing both centuries-old classical as well as contemporary selections written far more recently. Now, even though North Campus is a bit of a trek for those who were not forced to live there, the journey will be worth it. What’s more, it’s free.

So step onto a bus and come on over to soothe the dull ache of your looming exams. The show is Monday, November 26 at 7:30 PM at the Earl V. Moore Building, Britton Recital Hall. Be there or be square.

PREVIEW: Basement Arts Presents Captive Babries

If you aren’t familiar with Basement Arts, they are a series of FREE student-run plays and performances that typically run in the evenings at the Walgreen Drama Center.

This weekend you have a chance to see the production Captive Barbies, the Hopwood Award-winning play by Levi Stroud and directed by Leia Squillace.

The summary:

Captive Barbies is a fast-paced black comedy that explores the story of the anti-hero, Lee, a criminal that lives in deluded realities, as he attempts to escape the law after committing a serious crime. Along the way to freedom, however, his journey clashes with a love triangle between a (kind of) married couple on the brink of collapse and a closeted cop. His quest for escape becomes impossible as their stories become increasingly entangled and emotions and motives develop. The piece is a meditation on notions of maleness, masculinity, and the conflict that erupts between the true self and the performance of self while facing the restrictions of normativity.

PREVIEW: Rachana (presented by Michigan Sahana)

Meaning “creation” in Hindi, Rachana, Michigan Sahana’s first performance of the year, will showcase Michigan students’ original choreography and skillful mastery of Indian instruments. The musical and dance sub-groups that collaboratively make up Sahana celebrate the traditional art forms of Classical India. Count the dancers’  graceful spins and wonder at their ability to avoid dizziness. Tap your toe to the percussive rhythms of the tabla, the Indian version of bongos (watch this amazing tabla video!)  Indulge in a dip into Indian cultural history and power up for the rest of your Halloween night with a little sitar melody.
