For the supposed main character of my story I never really drew Simon, or Syme as he used to be known as, a lot. Which is a shame because he’s a really fun character to draw.
I had always envisioned Simon as someone with an androgynous face, one of those Chinese pretty boys. Trying to capture that beauty while also making him look Chinese was hard. I started off by making the face too blocky, jaw square, chin short, lines straight. In actuality, I should have done the opposite. Longer face, defined chin, and delicate features with rounder lines. The drawing with the black line art on the second picture was the face I stuck with.
It was good that he has a simpler-to-draw monster face I could use when designing his outfit. Simon is this dramatic guy who can be stealthy. So he gets a coat with a dramatic collar and torn, swishy ends. When he wears it, he kind of reminds me of a ghost. The ends would move beautifully along with his wild movements too. He gets a back brace that looks kind of like a corset too, to emphasize how he doesn’t care for gender norms.

I think the thing that helped me most with figuring out Simon was drawing him a lot for an OC-tober event. Here are some of my favorites:
