Joy is expressed in so many forms and through so many experiences, objects, and memories. Hold onto that which is real and beautiful.

Six Twenty-Five
Hospital chatter comprised of hushed whispers
A cacophony of voices
And low sighs
Six twenty-two
A cart’s wheels squeaking through the halls
Maddening in its movement
Never ceasing
Six twenty-three
Machines whirring on the hour
The PA system’s jargon tumbles into the void
The clock ticks methodically
Six twenty-four
A girl watches
She smiles where shy lay
Extended by
Wires and cords
An IV drains her
But the creases beneath her eyes
The folded lines circling her mouth
Refuse to quit
She smiles triumphantly
Whether it is old wisdom written in her genes
Or young innocence that drives her face
Is unimportant
She smiles despite it all
Her body decays
With fatigue that makes the bones melt
Pain that drives pleading
She smiles
It’s unnatural
And odd
A peculiar display
In such a place
The human will
Falls apart
And yet finds contentment
Her pale eyes gaze at blank white walls
Her ears absorb the speech in the halls
She looks inward
To starry sky camping trips
And family movie nights
To swimming pool laps with rounds of Marco Pollo
The times when things were beautiful
Her parents will be here soon
Her brother and sister too
She smiles at the thought of six twenty-five
Almost to the parking lot
And through the revolving doors
They will be here
Beside her
To reminisce and laugh
About what once was
And could still be
Despite it all,
She smiles
Bright and bold
Because things have been beautiful
And will again
At six twenty-five

Hello! I would like to give a quick rundown of what I will be working on during this academic year. To spice things up, I will create an assortment of pieces in varying mediums. Each month, I will focus on a particular emotion/theme.

The mediums I will include are digital art, photography, poetry, and short story-making. I hope you enjoy what I put together, and feel free to leave comments if you’d like!
See you next Sunday,
EKArts
So I promised last week that the final update would be on May 4th. I was wrong. I ended up having an internet connection outage yesterday and couldn’t post anything from anywhere except my phone, but then I couldn’t log into my account from mobile… Anyway, that’s enough excuses.
Over the summer, I’m planning on taking lots of reference pictures while staying abroad in Hong Kong for artistic inspiration. In this vein, I’m trying to better organize the photographs I’ve taken on various vacations and trips as references for future paintings/drawings. You can see a sneak preview of one of my photo folders here. Maybe you’ll recognize one of these in a future drawing I post to this blog!

Ever since I started posting on Arts Ink several months ago, I’ve enjoyed making posts about various topics to post every Friday. Can you believe that there are already ten of them?

As a reminder, I’ll be tabling at Anime Park this Saturday (May 7th) at Canton High School. If you want to see me in the fall, I’ve heard there’ll be another Con Ja Nai at UMich in the fall, and I was also recently accepted with a Stamps classmate to table at YoumaCon in November. More details to come! No matter if you come see my illustrations in person or just read my columns online, I’m glad to share my artwork and artistic journey with everyone! See you soon!
The semester has finally come to an end so I wanted to thank you all for following what was my first photography blog of this kind. Maybe you learned something new, whether you’re new to photography or not, or maybe at least you enjoyed some of the photos. I am happy I could share my work and (hopefully useful) tips and I am excited for what the future arts.ink content brings us. I don’t know yet about the next steps of Tolaroids but I will make sure to announce them. As always, I am happy to just chat or answer any questions, so catch me at @akilian.jpg or akilian@umich.edu.
As a farewell photo series, I am sending you all the times you caught me with a camera in my hands 🙂
Have a great summer,
– Tola.
