Yim Bollidae

So this is Yim Bollidae. Some may recognize this person as Yarrow Archimille from a year or so ago. They’re Yim now, as well as a Fae-Dragon.

I wanted Yim to have this elflike Fred Astaire-esque quality to them. Very ties-and-tails. I didn’t want them to look too flashy, because for most of their story they’re in travel clothes. I tweaked their collar to show their closed-in personality, and dabbled with their horn decorations. I wanted time to have glass horns with spiked piercings that could be seen through the glass, but I imagine it would be time-consuming to draw. I’m debating removing them.

Industrious Illustrating #22 – Model Kits

Hello again! I ended up taking last week off because of final projects and exams, so to compensate I’m making more posts than usual this week.

Recently I started building a plastic model of the F-15E Strike Eagle mech from the visual novel “Muv Luv Alternative”. Because the model’s joints are articulated and its overall design is blocky and mostly angular, it’ll be a good default pose reference for figuring out how a mech’s body and limbs would look in three-dimensional perspective while also making changes in my mind’s eye to better fit whichever mech I’m actually drawing. While I didn’t think of myself as a very hands-on or crafty person before, I’m actually really enjoying cutting and filing down plastic pieces to assemble into a working model. I plan on purchasing more model kits in the future for either reference material or simple enjoyment.

Here’s what I have done so far:

While I am a little disappointed that I haven’t had much time to make new artwork over the past two months, I also increasingly feel like it’s important to feed one’s artistic psyche by enjoying life’s many offerings and gradually processing them into memories, feelings, and knowledge that can inform one’s creative output. I hope that my non-art posts demonstrate that I’m not a machine creating fully formed artwork on a dime — I’m always gathering new information and reference material that may one day show up in my artwork.

I’ll be spending most of winter break traveling abroad, so I’ll bring back a lot of reference photographs that I’ll use as inspiration for future artwork. I hope everyone has a relaxing and fun winter break!

S2 Scribble #9: Bit Part

“I want a bit part in your life,”

Tonight is my last night in Ann Arbor for the 2022-2023 school year, and I spent it packing my things with the company of one of my best friends. While I’m excited and thrilled to be spending next semester studying abroad in Berlin, goodbyes are hard. When I first got to Ann Arbor in fall 2020, I didn’t know anyone here. Regardless, the hopefulness and possibility of being in a new city excited me. Two and a half years later, even though I’m an out-of-state student, Ann Arbor feels like home.

“A walk-on would be fine.”

It isn’t home because of the routines I find myself falling into. It isn’t home because I walk a familiar route to class every day. It isn’t home because I know the surrounding areas and street names and have memorized my Ann Arbor zip code. It isn’t home because I’ve spent the majority of my past few years here. It’s home because of the community I’ve created and the amazing friends who surround me.

“I just want a bit part in your life, rehearsing all the time.”

I’ll see most of them once I return to Ann Arbor for the 2023-2024 school year, but for my friends graduating this year, goodbyes have been even harder. I’ve wanted to go to Berlin for years, and the fact that my friends support me in this journey means the world to me. Now that the time has come for me to say goodbye, I can’t help but reflect on how grateful I am for my community of friends here – for this small community that knows me better in many ways than anyone else does. I’m so lucky to have so many wonderful, positive people in my life and to be so close with them that they make me feel at home.

“I just want a bit part in your life.”

My room is finally packed up, and I’m writing this before I get a good night’s sleep in anticipation of my long drive home tomorrow. While I’ll miss my home in Ann Arbor, I look forward to creating a new one in Berlin. While of course I plan on hearing about everything I miss within my Ann Arbor community and updating them about my adventures in Berlin, I look forward to us being able to share everything in person come Fall 2023.

“Little more than a cameo, nothing traumatic when I go.”

I can tell

Why can’t you see?

Is it because I read when you look?

Search soulless for meaning in every breath

while you take in deep

Restless while you sleep

Will you recoil when I do unto you what you do to me

Tremble when I choose not to speak?

There’s joy and anguish here

Relish and pleasure here

Is that all?

TOLAROIDS: Travels

As the semester is coming to an end, I’m going back home! So I decided to post some travel-themed pictures, including some of my city 🙂

Happy finals!

A Day In Our Lives #8

Hey guys!

As a STAMPS student, I feel really fortunate that this semester I don’t have any finals and I was able to head home a week early! I know a lot of people who are currently struggling through finals and you guys got this! This week is a little bit of a self-portrait because I am wearing my favorite Christmas sweater in this drawing. It is a Tom Nook sweater (animal crossing) that my partner got for me from Game Stop. I am really excited about my classes next semester, which will include ceramics and fabric construction.  I am really looking forward to spending more time with my family over break. The program I used for this image, as well as all of my other images is Procreate.

See you next week,
Marissa
