The Indian Artist: From Blank Canvas to Masterpiece

Good evening everybody! I hope that you are all doing well and had a good weekend! For this week’s post I will be sharing the process that I take when starting a new piece, specifically, an oil painting. I started a new painting that will be a part of a potential tryptic or collection.

  1. The first and most important part of starting any piece is coming up with an idea and either taking or finding non-copyright reference photos. I tend to use a mix of both. When I have an idea and do not have the means to find a model and take my own pictures, I resort to royalty free images that can be stitched together to figure out the perfect composition.
  2. Next, I sketch or map out the composition. I usually always do this using a pencil regardless of if it is on paper or canvas. I also always tint my canvas with a neutral brown such as burnt sienna if I am doing a painting. This helps create a non-white base on which I can accurately read the tone and hue of my paint.
  3. Start laying down the color! In the case of paint, I just dive in and start to establish my background. If it is a simple background, I try to knock this out first and foremost. This helps to cover empty space and makes the piece a lot less intimidating. I then move onto the main subject. I generally just start with the part of the piece that speaks to me the most to build up momentum.
  4. Work work work! There is nothing more to do once you have established a composition and your materials of choice than to actually put in the time. My favorite thing to do is light a candle, put on Schitt’s Creek, and get to work!
  5. Depending on the medium you are using, there are different options for finishers once a piece is complete. For oil paint, varnish your painting after ample drying. Air on the side of caution and wait at least 4-5 weeks. Graphite and colored pencils can be finalized with various different varnishes.
  6. Nothing left to do but enjoy your hard work and brilliant creativity!

I know this was a little bit different of a post but I hope that you all enjoyed! As always, if anything that I discussed in this post stands out, or if any questions arise please feel free to comment and share your thoughts!

Looking forward to next Monday!

Mercenary’s Guild Members

So this was for my worldbuilding project. I decided to design uniforms for a political section in my world, the Mercenary’s Guild. I wanted to show the different ways members customized their uniforms. I went onto a website called Line of Action and had it generate poses for me to draw, and I filled in the uniform stuff afterward. I wanted to add some nonhuman members too.

Love

If you could write me

You’d write wrong

Right before you

Say something I’ve said

How could you

Could you know-how

You could wait

Wait till you can

But then

You’d be too early

Early morning

I see you sleeping

Slowly breathing

A smile slipped

Across your face

But who could talk

While tangled

Round green shapes of varying sizes glow against the black background. The text reads, "Immersive."

Immersive #17: Texts from Random Strangers

Recently, I was messaged by a random number asking to catch up in a totally normal “we live in a pandemic and I haven’t contacted you in a while” setting. While I wasn’t the correct recipient and was later addressed as “sir”, it made me wonder about the messages we shoot into the dark and how we assume it’ll reach the right person. There’s so much context that is implied in these messages, yet when we aren’t in the know it can come off as quite odd. It makes you think a lot about the lives of people you’ve never met before and what is going on in their own heads right then and there. Are they nonchalant about making a simple mistake? Or are they on the other end of the spectrum and freaking out about disclosing potentially personal information to a stranger who could hold it hostage? Nevertheless, I don’t mind being sent a harmless message or two, it gives me something interesting to talk about for the next week!

Note: Welcome to Immersive v3! We’ll be making a lot more comics this semester and thinking about context within communications, so stay tuned!

Shout Out to the Kings

Now, in most settings, you might say “a queen doesn’t need a man! Fuck having a king!” And normally I’d agree with you. However, many drag queens are cis gay men (by now in this article we should all have learned that you do NOT have to be a cis gay man to be a drag queen and we stan all the trans and AFAB drag queens!!!) and many drag kings are trans men, cis women, or nonbinary icons. Drag kings are certainly a less popular sect of drag, but definitely not any less incredible in terms of performers and artistry. Just because RuPaul’s Drag Race would feature any drag kings doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be paying the MOST attention to these icons. So, I’m gonna go through a few of my favorites!

Tenderoni (@tenderoni88)

Tenderoni is THEE Chicago drag king and the current 2021 winner of the Drag Queen of the Year Pageant

Landon Cider (@landoncider)

The winner of season 3 of the Boulet Brothers’ Dragula who has been on tours with Drag Race queens and an icon in his own accord.

Luc Ami (@luc.ami)

Another Chicago icon, this alien drag deity creates some of the most stunning artistry and hosts Queeriod, a drag show for new drag talents!

Inah Demons (@inahdemons)

Considered the “Tumblr Sexyman of Drag”, Inah is a Filipino drag artist who creates incredibly unique and colorful looks online that are truly one of a kind.

Shay They (@shaythey)

A New York drag quing clown who’s stunning in a clown white face and iconic mustache. If you’re in New York and they’re performing, you have to go see them!

Luv Ami (@luvamiking)

Luc Ami’s drag son, a young Chicago king who brings the PERFORMANCE and the looks.

Vigor Mortis (@heyvigormortis)

A Brooklyn king who does burlesque and drag, known for some chaos and silliness and who I’ve had the great honor to see him perform with googly eyes all over his body.

K. James (@k.james_switchnplay)

Another Brooklyn king who’s a member of the Switch n Play collective and is the coolest cat in Brooklyn drag, and everyone is also in love with.

Andro Gin (@androginking)

The definition of makeup artistry, Andro has some of the most iconic looks and the most beautiful creations put together on their face.

ShowPonii (@showponii)

Another Brooklyn king, ShowPonii is an icon with his clown-white face and unique sense of artistry.

PB (@vainglorious_pb)

Another fresh face of Chicago drag, with a stamped face and some incredible performances. They may be new to the scene, but definitely give them a look!
