Chapter 8

Hello, and welcome back to Captured Moments! This week, I am showing a day (April 9th) in my life.

9:30-10:30

I went to my aural theory class. Today, I learned about sentences and periods and how to identify the difference between the two in a piece. I listened to many examples, ranging from Beethoven to the movie “Frozen”, and identified if the song was a sentence or period. A sentence in musical terms has one cadence in the end and begins with a basic idea. This basic idea is then repeated and fragmented. On the other hand, a period has two cadence. The first cadence is weaker than the final cadence. The picture I provide is a catchy song I learned that is an example of a sentence!

12:30-1:30

I then went to my sight-reading class. Today, I sight read a movement from a Beethoven piece. This class is very helpful for pianists as it helps us sight read faster and accurately!

3-4

I went to central campus for my French class. I had a journal-like test in class today in which I wrote about my daily routine.

The last thing I did today was practice. Juries (final for piano performance major) are coming up, so I practice as much as I can.

That’s it for this week. See you next week!

4/11/24

All the things I’ve accumulated

Sitting listless and unnumbered

A red towel soaked from suds fleeing from the sink

You have to use your nails to get clean

Wash cloths aren’t enough

Some people don’t use them

I can’t stop to talk to you

Clean clean splash nothing is clean

“Miss 1 pink pill in week 1 of your pack take the first as soon as you remember

The second at your regular time”

Hima Concept Sketches

Read more: Hima Concept Sketches

Here are the Hima concept sketches I mentioned a lot of weeks ago! You can tell I tried to make her look younger. I found the solution to be making her eyes bigger and her face smoother. She is 21, after all.

Throughout the sketches, you can see my drawings of her in workwear. I also added sketches of her in fancy dress, her as a child, and her in a bra. The more revealing pieces are to show off the scars she got working under a tyrannical company. As you can see, I gave her face stitches, to show that she can’t hide the damage no matter how many bandages she wears. In her poses, I try to communicate how tall and lanky Hima is. I think it worked.

Observer: Golden Pig Head

I built this pig head as a spiritual decoration for a scene that I am working on in Maya. I chose to build it with a shiny gold texture because of the light treatment, which gives it the effect of a heavy, shiny object. The image also contains details such as animal skin texture, rolls of fat and uneven teeth.  And, to make the image more realistic I gave the head a serious yet arrogant expression. Zbrush was used because this image will be used in a 3D animated story.

S3 Scribble #21: BODYGUARD

“They couldn’t catch you and they never will,”

This past weekend, I went to Cleveland, Ohio to see the solar eclipse in totality. In 2017, my family and I traveled to Columbia, South Carolina to experience totality, and it was such an amazing experience that we agreed to see the next solar eclipse that crossed the United States in totality as well. This year, in 2024, we fulfilled that promise and met up in Cleveland for the weekend to experience the awe-inspiring event once again.

“Sometimes I hold you closer just to know you’re real.”

I drove there from Ann Arbor with one of my brothers, who is a huge fan of Beyoncé. She just released a new album entitled Cowboy Carter, and I promised my brother that I would wait to listen to it until we were in the car together so he could tell me all about the album and various songs. Not only was this a great bonding experience for us (music is one of my favorite ways to get to know someone better, even someone I’ve known for the vast majority of my life), but it was love at first listen. I’ve had songs from Cowboy Carter on repeat ever since, but none make me feel as happy and ready to get up and dance as “BODYGUARD.”

“Tell me your problems, I take how you feel,”

Clearly, I’ve chosen a happy song for a happy blog detailing a happy weekend. Getting to spend time with my whole family all together was rejuvenating and fun, and the eclipse did not disappoint. For me, I don’t think experiencing totality will ever lose its appeal. Even though I experienced it back in 2017, my sense of wonder during this year’s eclipse was unmatched. To be able to witness the eclipse alongside those closest to me made it all the more special.

“I show you an exit,”

After a chaotic and traffic-filled drive back to Ann Arbor, I felt nothing but gratitude and love. I’m thrilled to have had such a wonderful and rare opportunity to have seen a second total solar eclipse, and I’m happy to have made such fun memories with my family. I’m also incredibly glad that I’ve got a new, amazing album on rotation – perfect for the fast-approaching summer!

“When you’re restless, I take the wheel.”

Wolverine Stew: Graveyard Eclipse

I follow the path of quills and daffodils

Blue ground-facing stars and yellow suns

A spring soil night as the sky above

Turns dim, a growing grey

But a welcome one in place of

The gloom that has begun to break

And as I walk I see dozens of others

All with their glasses that turn the sun

Into a campfire crescent moon

Celebrating on every patch of grass

In the front lawns where

A cracked, plastic skeleton rests in a pile

I end up at the cemetery, fellow sky-gazers

Sitting amongst the headstones as

The trees begin to bud, robins rushing between them

Starry blue flowers sprouting beneath

As moss creeps across the polished names

And lichen-loved stones

Like faces and upturned mushrooms caps

And just in time I find a place

Where the branches part

Where I feel welcomed to sit beside the graves

Where the sounds of my eyelashes

Against the dark film that guards them

Sounds like rustling in the pinecones and dry leaves

And the chirp of birds reaches its crescendo

As that waning crescent almost gives way

Before waxing yet again

And I spend a few more moments

Planted in the grass

Before making my way out of the cemetery

I pick a direction, and on I go

Because as the sky brightens

There’s so many

White-winged moths, wolf spiders, cranes, colonies of ants

To spot along the path

And I hope to see them all

Before this day ends
