PREVIEW: Master’s Recital–Jordan Smith on Flute

Like the Pied Piper leading all the rats out of town with his captivating music, so will Jordan Smith untangle us from our parents’ hair and on back to school.

Allow yourself to drift back into the grind with the gift of flute music to make the process easier. Jordan Smith will be putting on his master’s recital, playing both centuries-old classical as well as contemporary selections written far more recently. Now, even though North Campus is a bit of a trek for those who were not forced to live there, the journey will be worth it. What’s more, it’s free.

So step onto a bus and come on over to soothe the dull ache of your looming exams. The show is Monday, November 26 at 7:30 PM at the Earl V. Moore Building, Britton Recital Hall. Be there or be square.

REVIEW: U-M Chamber Jazz Recital

Never before had I considered the mandolin or banjo to have a place in the jazz world. And I certainly did not expect to experience a solo of either of these instruments in any context outside of a renaissance festival or a square dance competition, respectively.

Boy, was I wrong.

The performance was split into three sets, each a different student group exploring a wildly different facet of the music genre.

The first erred on the side of folk, incorporating a sound more twangy than I’d have expected from jazz musicians. But the smoothness of the violin’s bow sliding across the strings and the low voice of the cello lurking under the melody rounded out the tunes they played, making the sound much more complex and multi-dimensional. And, I must stress, Noah Fishman on mandolin and Matt Davis on banjo went hard.

The next group played in the classic big-band style of jazz, bursting into the music the second they began with grand flourishes of slurred crescendos and bright moments of staccatoed frenzy. It was hard seeing the relatedness of the first and second groups, even though they were a part of the same genre, and shared a few of the same instruments. But rather than this near-dichotomy being a distraction, it worked as a testament to jazz’s dynamicity. It was disappointing to me, as a piano player, that the pianist Kaysen Chown was barely audible amidst the brash bass tones, as the higher pitch and lightness of the instrument would have complimented the music greatly.

The last group to play featured a jazz of the sultry kind; the high call of the saxophones (Peter Goggin on alto and William Wood on tenor) was almost erotic. The songs were rambling and suave, able to warm the mind and body simultaneously. I could find myself in some underground jazz club, surrounded by the coolest cats around, dressed in all black, perhaps sporting a beret.

When I walked out of the auditorium, I still felt warm, even despite the biting wind of the mid-November night. Maybe it was the well-heated building, but more likely it was an effect of the music. I strode back to my dorm with a strange new confidence derived from the sheer sophistication of the evening. This lasted nearly the whole walk home, ending abruptly as I tripped on a crack in the sidewalk (a testament to the exclusiveness of the genre, maybe; one can fall out of its favor with a single uncool move).

All in all, a good night, thanks to this group of talented SMTD students!

PREVIEW: U-M Chamber Jazz Ensemble

Jazz illicits an image of a smoky nightclub populated by a gaggle of elderly men in old-fashioned hats; the youth it used to enthral have aged, and have not been replaced by a new generation…or have they? The genre is in a strange place these days–it is somehow both the music of our grandparents and our own; its roots are deep and widespread and fully entangled in the rhythm and blues of both our Ella Fitzgeralds and our Daniel Caesars.

Come listen to the fusion of new and old 8 PM on Monday, November 19 in Stamps Auditorium at the Walgreen Drama Center. Michigan students will be performing both classic jazz hits as well as some of their own creations. There are no tickets, so make sure to come early to guarantee a seat!

 

PREVIEW: hand&hand BFA Senior Dance Concert

My mother signed me up for ballet and tap dancing at the tender, undeserving age of three. I quit when I was five because I hated the makeup I had to wear on recital days. But my passion for the art unfortunately lived on, giving me far too much confidence in my “abilities” until I got to middle school, when school dances forced me to realize I had at least fourteen left feet.

Sometimes we need to face our realities and learn to appreciate folks talented at things we may never master. This lets us experience and support more of the world’s talent and culture. So join me at the Betty Pease Studio Theater in the Dance Building to see the senior dance majors Alyssa Gorman, Annelise Senkowski, Kandis Terry, and Amy Wensley perform their solo and group choreographies.

The shows are November 15-17, each at 8 PM. Tickets are for sale at the door for $7. Come by and show your support for some true talents!

 

REVIEW: Keith Alberstadt

It’s not difficult to make me laugh. In fact, anyone who knows me will inform you I laugh at my own jokes far more often (and loudly) than the average person.

However, when I came to the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase this past Thursday, I was not in the best of moods. My friend wasn’t able to make it at the last minute, which would have been fine if I had known the seat I was assigned was at one of the little two-person tables directly at the foot of the stage, (where I would no doubt be at risk of having to participate in the show) with a place card that read “Reserved–Pinchak, 2.” The gaping hole next to me was especially conspicuous as every other seat was filled.

Despite the awkwardness of the seating arrangement, I was looking forward to Keith’s performance. As he began, I scootched my seat back toward the stage and listened in.

It’s hard to say what makes a person funny. It’s not often just the content; the same jokes told by different comedians have a different effect on people. While some fall flat, others are absolutely hilarious. Comedy is quite similar to theater in the way that stage presence plays a key role in its success. A comic’s ability to interact with their audience, use the space the stage provides, and work with timing in their set can make all the difference.

Keith Alberstadt seems to do all of this with ease. He made very direct eye contact with everyone in the audience, formed quick-paced dialogues with us, and moved all around the stage. In a lot of ways, he reminded me of the great Jim Carrey, one of my favorite actors. He’s known for his comedies like The Mask and the Ace Ventura movies, though he’s done solid work in dramas like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A lot of his success comes from one unique characteristic: his “rubber” face. The facial expressions he can make are nothing short of astounding, and have contributed quite a lot to the characters he’s played. Alberstadt has this feature too: the wide mouth seems to stretch infinitely, eyebrows able to shift and slide to convey dozens of different emotions. He could imitate an old man or a newborn goat with striking accuracy. He is officially in my book of truly talented comedians.

PREVIEW: Keith Alberstadt

As the absolute joy of midterms finally passes us by, I think we’re all in need of a good laugh.

We’re in luck: the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase is presenting renowned comic Keith Alberstadt this week! The man has been around, appearing on television shows like Last Comic Standing and Late Night with Seth Meyers. He’s also worked for Saturday Night Live as a freelance writer, and has performed for US troops in the Middle East.

Coffee and Red Bull can only dig you so far out of your grave. Come to the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase and come back to life.
