Observer: Agriculture

Whenever winter comes, it reminds me of agriculture and food. I used textured brushes to mimic the traditional Chinese painting style. I drew the boy and the cow in a modern comic style to have some fun with the old painting style. I used the seal script type, used by the Chinese thousands of years ago, to stress the traditional Chinese culture in my art. China is an agricultural-based country, so I chose to draw the wheat field and the boy who herds the cow to represent the image of August. I left a lot of empty space and used very few brush strokes to make the image simple and textured. I used Procreate for this piece, to experiment with a different software program and used Photoshop to add the words to the image.

Observer: us

I observed people’s emotions and motions at school and on the street. With people constantly moving, I try to capture the figure and mood quickly. Each of the figure drawings on the second page took around 20 seconds to draw. This is a quick page of sketch with an emphasis on the flow and emotion of people.

Observer: Walking to the chaos

I explored my identity through this collage piece. My immigration experience makes me feel duo identity and at the same time I feel the loss of identity, which I used the chaotic patterns and Chinese and NYC buildings to express the sense of lost and chaotic. The little figure at the bottom represents me, trying to look for who he was, but was stopped by the red light. The piled up buildings, air pods, and flowers symbolizes my experience and the two circles above represent the two different suns that I see on two different lands. I used patterns such as eyes, fishes, flowers, and wolves to represent my state of mind: I feel watched, I need food, I enjoy nature, and I have my ambition. This is a work that I play around to find what makes me becomes the person who I am today.
