Review: Handel’s Messiah

Handel’s glorious, “Messiah” was in three parts.
The first part discussed the coming of the Messiah; the second part ( my favorite) deals with his purpose of being on earth and all the sacrifices he made; and the last part discusses why we should be thankful for him.
I loved how some of the notes ( from musical instruments) fulfilled the perfect cresendo and decresendo in the second part as they described some of the more sacrifices that Christ made. Hence, it made the second act the most heightened and dramatic of the three. There were several instruments which helped create this music.
My favorite were the notes from the harpsichord. But perhaps, I am a little biased because the harpsichord is my favorite instrument. I will also add that the choral voices were very uplifting. The performance by Brenda Rae was rather elegant. But my all-time favorite part of this event was when we in the audience got to sing “Hallelujah, Hallelujah.” That truly felt grand to be part of a classically and well known musical verse- and it was fun!

Preview for Handel’s Messiah

Handel’s Messiah is an Ann Arbor Holiday Tradition! Many townies say that the Holiday season hasn’t officially started here until one sees Handel’s Messiah. So, why not take a break from frenzy-final-studies and go to this glorious masterpiece of music. The instrumental music and glorious voices are offered by the UMS choral union. It is rumored that the Hill Auditorium is decorated with holiday magic for this performance:) Go and See it!!

But the lecture continues from 4-530! At the end of these events- you will end up saying ‘Mahalo’ to yourself for going.

Review for Fall Concert Video

The event was fun as I stepped off the stairs into the big gathering room of the Ed Center. There were hand made posters of Video-Concert Event, just as there were some large bowls of chips, dip, and candy. There some smiling faces sitting on the carpetted green floor. Anyway, in 10 minutes somebody clicked the on button on the projector, and from there we saw previous events during the Fall semester. I decided to stay for the Halloween Pops’ Concert Event.

I really liked what I saw about the Concert! There were throngs of costumed kids at the event! Some were fairies, sheriffs, little jedi.. you name it!
The musicians were greatly costumed as well!
But as it turned out, the conductors were also greatly costumed, too. One of them was a bear. Another was a cowgirl!

My favorite song which was performed was Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld!
Some of the kids were kicking it up in the form of a can-can towards the end of the song!
The others were March of the Little Goblins; The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Lever du Jour, Hoe Down, Liebestod, Overture to Ophelia in the Underworld,Queen Mab Scherzo, and Danse Bacchanale.

But my most favorite parts were when the director of the orchestra came out in a blonde wig and a very feminine voice ( I guess he was in drag..) and thanked all of us for coming! He even said, that many of the conductors go on to work in places like Carnegie Hall! It was astonishing to hear that! He also thanked the audience members for being there as a way for the conductors on them! Who knew..
My other most favorite part was when he yelled out, “And who are ya gonna call if you have ghosts.. Ghostbusters!”
Then all the conductors in Ghost-busting-grey-suits came in from the aisles and went to the stage. There they were dancing it up like none other! One of them even had ray-ban aviators on! Fun! It seemed like such a fun event! In sum, the concert was great!

After the video was done, I had a few more snacks and bid adieu to the other guests.

There will be snacks and fun people around!

In addition, you can see U of M student musicians in adorable outfits and the graduate student conductors in crazy-cute outfits as well as they were during the concert!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Review

Cons: I am not going to lie to you. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs isn’t my favorite animated flic.

I kept getting confused by the story- especially because I hadn’t seen the first CLoudy with a Chance of Meatballs film. It took me a while to figure out what had happened in the first movie. After a long time, I kinda got a glimpse that Flint Lockwood’s father was a technophobe, that Flint made a cool machine (the FLDSMDFR) which made food from water in the past, that Chester V was the villain in the past movie, now he turned Flint’s invention as a way to get rid of foodanimals on another island ( or rather turn them into food bars), but he has deceived Flint in the process by asking his help in destroying the FLDSMDFR, which unknownst to Flint will end up destroying the foodanimals/stop the production of foodanimals.

In other movies, say Toy Story 3, I hadn’t seen the original Toy Story but I still understood Toy Story 3 ( I have seen the original movie since). I felt like I was dropped in the story of Andy going off to college and the toys’ fears and fates in relation to this event. Maybe I didn’t understand a few original Toy Story references, but I understood the movie rather cohesively.

They don’t have that subtle emotional humor that some other animated flics have had. In the movie Bolt, there’s a scene where Rhino the hamster waves from the top of the truck to a college student in the passenger seat of another car. The student looks stunned and confused. Later, at an RV park, the student is about to bite into a sandwich and he sees Rhino looking at him again! The student looks befuddled by this, yet is silent about with his surprise. These subtle hints of humor.. are not really found in this movie.

I also didn’t find too much winning dialogue in this film. In Toy Story 3, as Mr. Potato Head is trying to drive the barbie car with the other characters in tow A bit later, long-legged hottie Barbie hops in. He is so attracted by her and simultaneously conflicted he says, “I am a married spud. I am a married spud,” in his rapid Brooklyn (possibly Jewish) accent! This is not found in this movie too much.

One thing I have noticed with animated movies these days- is that the sequels can often be just as good as their prequels. The Toy Story movies, The Shrek movies, the Monsters’ INC movies etc.

WIth a lot of “actual people-actors” i.e non-animated films, the same has not always been true. Yes, the Godfather franchise with the original and its sequel Godfather part II will go down in film history as classics. But if you look at other films ( some lesser quality) like say.. Sex in the City, Legally Blonde, Wall Street.. and compare them to their sequels, Sex in the City 2, Legally Blonde 2, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the sequels were of much less quality.

In my opinion, the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs franchise seems to be following the lesser-quality-sequel-pattern of films mentioned in the paragraph above.

Pros: The illustration in this movie is phenomenal. The color is especially vivid and so, so rich.

I also thought the foodanimals’ names and creation were amazing: Shrimpanzees, tacodile, hippotatumus, peanut butter and jellyfish. I cannot get their images out of my head.

Some of the voices were great. I liked Flint’s father’s voice! Speaking about the Godfather franchise, James Caan ( who played Sunny/Santino) does Flint’s dad’s voice!

I will end with saying that the movie is great if you have seen Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs- then the movie will be fine for you… because it doesn’t take you a while to figure out what happened in the first movie.

2.75 out of 5 stars
