REVIEW: Berlin Philharmonic

It is a rare event when you get to see some of the world’s best musicians all on a stage together, directed by the very famous Simon Rattle. What was almost as special as this was the mere fact of how many people showed up to Hill Auditorium both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon to see the Berlin Phil. I know that classical music can sometimes be a tad old-fashioned or out of the interests of millennials, but it was incredibly encouraging to see the masses of people, all different ages and backgrounds, coming out to see the concert.

The performance started with a more contemporary piece called Éclat by Boulez. The piece contrasted a variety of instruments on stage, from mandolin to harpsichord. Every musician had to be incredibly attentive to one another, as their entrances came randomly and spaced out by an arbitrary number of rests. Additionally, the combination of instruments kept changing to showcase different mixtures voices. Though it was not my personal favorite, the piece offered a fascinating contrast to the following part of the program.

The next piece they played was Mahler’s 7th Symphony. I have long been biased towards Mahler’s work, always feeling incredibly in tune with his melodies and emotionally connected to the solos. One of the most impressive aspects of the Philharmonic’s performance was the woodwind solis, which usually consisted of the flute, oboe, and clarinet principals, as well as the second principals at times. These few musicians were perfectly connected in their musicality and phrasing, to the extent that their separate instrument timbres would melt into one another at the end of a phrase. This was such a treat to hear, being a clarinetist myself and always enjoying the beautiful bell tones of a leading clarinet player.

But of course, I have to also mention the conductor. Rattle was a very enthusiastic conductor, but not to the extent like some others such as Dudamel. His exuberance was more subtle and concentrated into his communication with the musicians. Most of all, you could tell how close the director and symphony had come, when at the end Rattle traveled through the orchestra and shook the hand of every principal musician. It was a very touching moment, and I believe the entire audience felt its impact.

PREVIEW: Jake Shimabukuro, ukulele

This Wednesday, November 16, the University Musical Society is bringing ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro to the University of Michigan!  The concert will take place in Hill Auditorium at 7:30pm.

Shimabukuro started playing ukulele at the age of four, and now he is doing concerts around the world!  With a four-stringed instrument, he is able to play anything from classical music to popular songs such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”.  More information on Jake Shimabukuro can be found at his website: http://www.jakeshimabukuro.com/home/

REVIEW: Lemaître

When I first walked into Necto nightclub to see one of my favorite bands of the last several years, I didn’t know what to expect.  It was the first night after an unprecedented election that left many, myself included, reeling. As I had expected, the audience was small, only a few people lingering around the edges of the dance floor at my time of arrival, and while more people trickled in as the night progressed, it certainly never felt busy.

The opening act was none other than Chet Porter, who despite battling a cold was able to impress the crowd with his unique remixes of popular songs.  I shamefully admit that I had never heard of him or his work before the show, but I was instantly struck by the distinctive calming and dream-like sound of his work.  His unique style allowed each song to seamlessly blend into the next. I’ve since looked up his music online, and found that he has no small share of popularity himself.  Below is his original song, “Stay” featuring the vocals of Chelsea Cutler.

When Lemaître finally took the stage, the energy in the room ratcheted up several levels. What the audience may have been lacking in numbers was more than made up for in enthusiasm. After the band members themselves encouraged the crowd to pack in around the stage, the performance started in earnest. Despite having listened to almost all of the songs on the set list tens if not hundreds of times, I was amazed at how the band was able to breathe new life into each and every song, never letting their energy flag.

There was a large sculpture of Lemaitre’s logo behind them, and it was lit up in flashing lights and colors that were synchronized with their songs, further enhancing the energy of the performance.  During one of their songs, “We got U,” they even projected a picture of Bernie Sanders onto the sculpture, as a response to the recent election.

Why? It has been 7 years since the Berlin Philharmonic last came to Ann Arbor, and it is the final US tour of the orchestra with their director Simon Rattle. They are performing some of the most spectacular pieces ever composed, including Mahler’s 7th Symphony and Brahms’ 2nd Symphony. It will be a couple days you do not want to miss.

REVIEW: Roméo et Juliette

Roméo et Juliette can be described in two words: beautifully tragic.  Staying true to Shakespeare’s original Romeo and Juliet, director Paul Curran took the audience on an extraordinary journey with his cast of the UMSMTD University Opera Theatre students.  And the University Symphony Orchestra led by conductor and music director Martin Katz certainly did not disappoint!

I have never been to an opera before so I didn’t know what to expect.  All I knew going into it is that operas are extremely long and I’ve heard many stories of people falling asleep during them!  But that was not the case with Roméo et Juliette.  Sure, the opera was five acts with two intermissions, but the cast kept the show moving right along.  The audience was captivated by the French singing (subtitles in English), the elaborate costumes, and the incredible set.

I honestly have nothing negative to say about the leading couple.  Juliette (played by Janel Speelman on 11/10 and 11/12, and Kara Mulder on 11/11 and 11/13) not only looked stunning, but her voice was stunning as well.  And Romeo (played by Tom Cilluffo on 11/10 and 11/12, and Darius Gillard on 11/11 and 11/13) was as charming and handsome as ever.  These two were hard not to fall in love with.  The talent between these two leads was out of this world.

Not only were the characters of Romeo and Juliette wonderful, but the whole cast truly did not disappoint.  Juliette’s nurse, Gertrude (played by Helen Hass on 11/10 and 11/12, and Olivia Johnson on 11/11 and 11/13), helped Juliette run into the arms of her loved one.  Friar Lawrence (played by David Weigel on 11/10 and 11/12, and Samuel Kidd on 11/11 and 11/13) was loveable in every way.  His emotions were captured perfectly throughout the whole show.  Stephano (played by Isabel Signoret on 11/10 and 11/12, and Blair Whiteside 11/11 and 11/13) may have gotten the biggest applause after her solo that opened up Act III, scene 2.  And Mercutio (played by Yazid Pierce-Gray on 11/10 and 11/12, and John Daugherty on 11/11 and 11/13) found any humorous moment that he could and soaked it in, leaving the audience in lengths of laughter.  As I said before, the whole cast was truly phenomenal.

PREVIEW: Lemaître “We Got U” Tour

Ready to scream into the void about the results of last night’s election? Why not dance your troubles away with the Norwegian indie electronic duo, Lemaître, before launching right back into the thick of things like a true wolverine? They will be performing Tonight, November 9th at Necto Nightclub as a part of their “We Got U” tour.

I have personally been listening to their music for years, and love their sound, but the best way to showcase their music would be to simply listen to it for yourself.  The following video is for “Playing to Lose,” off their latest EP, Afterglow. The video also features some footage of their live show in London, perhaps giving us a sneak peek of what awaits us tonight.

The following music video is for “Closer” off of their Singularity EP. This song was used in one of the first promotional videos released for the launch of Google’s Pixel Phone.
