A Day In Our Lives #23

Hey guys,

This week I am posting a sketch I did when I took my friend to go try out Digipaint club here on campus. They have weekly meetings and normally do cute fun things that use digital painting. The week that we attended, the club hosted a workshop on how to draw birds, as well as how to create your own creatures. It was a fun experience but due to my extremely busy school schedule, I will not be able to attend weekly.

I decided to draw cows, which are one of my favorite animals. I think they are so cute! I am also generally better at drawing women in my cartoon style, which made drawing human-cows even easier. I picked some cute light blue and pink colors just to get them to stand out a bit. If I had more time I could have accessorized them a little more. Hope that you like it!

See you next week,

Marissa

Evolving Emotions: Trust- Poetry

New Perfume, Same Promises

That ring was a symbol

unity on my finger

All the times you said you loved me

words of undying truth

Quiet moments in the mornings

holding me in your arms

laughing by the fire

gazing at the sun turning amber

then a mellowed purple

Did you mean it when you slid

it on my finger

called me yours

promised me forever?

I thought we fit

like jigsaw grooves

but in your bed is another

and I can’t stand their perfume

I despise you.

What’s worse than false promises

the I love you’s

and blood diamonds

Are the promises you make

to that woman with her perfume

Fable Friday: Xarpo

Xarpo is considered the greek goddess of Autumn. Her name is also spelled Carpo and Karpo depending on the translation. She has two sisters: Thallo and Auxo, goddesses of spring and summer respectively. I wanted to make her a more modern-looking nymph/fairy and include burnt orange tones. All three of them were considered attendants to Aphrodite and guarded the path to Mount Olympus.

Simon Kuai: Fashion Week

Behold! My main man! So soon after I posted his group shot I decided to redesign him. I made his face more heart-shaped. You can see my word concepts on the upper left side.

Before, I planned his causal outfit to be sweats. Now, he’s in this black short-sleeved collarbone-exposing shirt that resembles a Hawaiian shirt. It’s because he sees himself as on vacation when he starts the story. It’s the little figure on the far right side of the image. I tried to find ways to incorporate red into his outfit without it taking over. I settled on him having some bloody heels.

I also got the concept to give him some statement earrings. I in real life love wearing statement earrings; I just keep forgetting to draw them on my characters. Hopefully, I can remember with Simon.

Industrious Illustrating #34 – Life Drawing 3

Can you believe that the Winter 2023 semester is already almost over? I’m personally gearing up both for Sophomore Year Review and for the upcoming convention tabling season, which means that I’m running around like a headless chicken trying to delegate enough time to all of the projects I have going on (concept art portfolio for my sophomore year project, new prints and branding materials for my convention tabling business, applying for internships…). What has remained consistent is that I’ve been diligently practicing my figure drawing skills in ARTDES 269 twice a week for this whole semester. That means that I have more figure drawings to show of more masc-aligned bodies, both in charcoal and in ink, that show how I’ve further developed my sense of anatomy, value, and constructing 3D forms. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone interested in drawing humans or simply improving their draftsmanship skills, and I’m also interested in seeing how many UMich students would be interested in some kind of figure drawing club or weekly session that would make figure drawing more accessible and regular for both art students and non-art students!
