Academia Jukebox: Cough It Out

I’ve seen a lot of students (including me) with the mindset, “once I achieve __, then I’ll be happy!” But the truth is all your problems don’t go away when you get accepted into that program or get that job you wanted. Sooner or later the next goal is going to pop up and the cycle will start all over again. It’s important to learn how to enjoy the “in-betweens”, as you go from one stage of your life into the next. Whether that’s appreciating where you’re at right now or being happy with the effort you put into your work, make sure you take some time to enjoy the routine parts of life. This week’s lyrics are from “Cough It Out” by the Front Bottoms. Listening to their music certainly helps me enjoy the time it takes to get from class to class! Check them out if you like indie/alternative rock.

Academia Jukebox: Pluto Projector

There were a lot of lines I related to in Rex Orange County’s Pluto Projector, I had a hard time deciding on a set of lyrics to visualize! Though it’s likely that Alex O’Connor wrote this piece about his emotions as a growing artist in the industry, I think it can be applied to anyone who has worries or doubts about their current life path. I’ve met people here who seem to have their entire life figured out- they’re confident in what they want to study, they’re passionate about their future aspirations, they’re on top of classes- when I start comparing myself to others it’s easy to feel behind. I’m sure some of you relate to this too. But it’s important to remember that everyone goes at their own pace! I know I don’t understand myself fully yet, but I trust with time things will all work out.

Academia Jukebox: Dark Green Water

These lyrics are from one of my favorite songs right now- Dark Green Water from Great Grandpa’s 2019 album “Four of Arrows”. When things go don’t go as well as we’d hoped it’s easy to see them as reflections of personal flaws. But it’s important to remember as students we’re here to learn and grow as best we can. Perfection is impossible to reach, rather we should strive to enjoy the path that we’re on. Being perfect would take away the fulfillment of learning, and without feeling the success and joy from working hard we’d never have a ‘perfect’ life. So here’s a reminder to enjoy the ride, and not stress about what you have or haven’t been able to achieve.
